Grove City splits with Bethany

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with visiting Bethany at College Field. Grove City earned a 6-0 win in the opener but Bethany pulled out a 7-4 victory in the second game.

In the opener, senior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) threw a three-hit shutout for Grove City. She struck out two and walked one in seven innings.

Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman first baseman Casey Woodcock (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) roped a two-run triple that scored sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) and sophomore catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

Shirey pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second inning by lacing a two-run single. Shirey's hit drove in sophomore center fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and freshman right fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).

Woodcock's fifth-inning sacrifice fly scored Shirey, giving the Wolverines a 5-0 lead. In the sixth, sophomore left fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) tripled and scored on a Lynskey sacrifice.

Morris and Shirey both finished 2 for 3.

In Game Two, the Wolverines (7-19, 4-12) scored four times over the final two innings but could not erase an early 6-0 deficit. Grove City broke through in the sixth when Shirey scored on a double by junior third baseman Baylie Jones (Conneautville, Pa./Conneaut Valley). In the seventh, Morris highlighted a three-run rally by driving in both Clarke and Lynskey with a two-out single.

Morris and Shirey each went 2 for 4 in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) started and yielded three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Freshman Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Grove City will visit Hiram Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
