Grove City sweeps OCU

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Ohio Christian (9-7) Friday afternoon at College Field. Grove City earned an 8-0, six-inning victory in the opener. In Game Two, Grove City pulled out a 1-0 victory.

In Game One, senior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) retired all 18 batters faced in earning the shutout victory. She struck out 10 batters in six innings to record her second consecutive shutout win.

In Game Two, sophomore Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit double that drove in sophomore left fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) with the winning run. Vidovic doubled prior to Morris' game-winning hit.

Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) also doubled in the nightcap. Grove City had just four hits in the win.

Senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) fired a one-hit shutout for the Wolverines, her first shutout of 2013. She struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Shirey tripled and drove in three runs while going 3 for 4 in the opener. Sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) also went 3 for 4 with a triple. Rayburn and sophomore center fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) both scored twice. Junior third baseman Baylie Jones (Conneautville, Pa./Conneaut Valley) roped a double.

Grove City (9-19) will close its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule at Saint Vincent Saturday at 1 p.m.
