Grove City falls in conference finale
LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team closed its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Saturday by dropping both ends of a league doubleheader at Saint Vincent. Saint Vincent earned a 4-3 win in Game One and then decisioned Grove City 9-0 in the nightcap.
Grove City charged out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game One by combining six hits with two Bearcat errors. Sophomore catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) highlighted the outburst with a run-scoring single that drove in sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia). Sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) and senior pitcher Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) also scored in the inning.
Saint Vincent scored single runs in the second and fourth innings before taking the lead with a pair of fifth-inning runs.
Shirey went 3 for 4 with a triple to lead Grove City's nine-hit attack. Clarke pitched 3 1/3 total innings and allowed two earned runs. Freshman Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) yielded two runs in 1 1/3 innings and took the defeat. Senior Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
In Game Two, Saint Vincent (12-18, 5-13 PAC) posted four first-inning runs and then broke open the game with five runs in the third. Shirey doubled while freshman left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) went 2 for 2.
Jentsch allowed four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Clarke finished out the third inning while Rothbard threw one scoreless inning.
Grove City (9-21, 4-14 PAC) will host Allegheny Monday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
