Wolverines close with sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team concluded the 2013 regular season Wednesday afternoon by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Pitt-Greensburg at College Field. Grove City earned a 5-3 victory in the opener and then picked up a 9-1 triumph in Game Two.

Grove City (11-21) trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth but rallied to tie the game. Freshman left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) doubled in freshman DP Casey Woodcock (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) to start the scoring for the Wolverines. Lynskey scored the second run of the inning on a single by sophomore second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley), who advanced to second on the throw home.

Rayburn scored the tying run moments later on a run-scoring single from senior Lauren Clarke (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell).

Grove City took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) roped a two-run, pinch-hit triple that scored Lynskey and freshman third baseman Claire Haumesser (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville).

Lynskey went 2 for 2 while sophomore shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) finished 2 for 3.

Senior pitcher Faith Jentsch (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) earned the win after allowing one earned run in seven innings.

Clarke tripled, doubled, scored two runs and knocked in four runs to help lead Grove City's 13-hit attack in Game Two. Her two-run double in the second inning helped Grove City grab a 4-0 lead.

Clarke also pitched a complete game, allowing no earned runs and just one hit in six innings. She fanned six.

Rayburn went 3 for 4 with two runs scored while Shirey tripled and singled. Lynskey went 2 for 3.

Grove City honored Clarke, Jentsch, outfielder Elsa Klingensmith (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and infielder Emily Reece (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) as part of Senior Day festivities prior to Wednesday's doubleheader. All four players conclude their career as four-year letterwinners.
