Grove City drops pair
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened its 2014 home schedule Wednesday afternoon by dropping a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Geneva at College Field. Geneva picked up a 9-1 win in Game One and then prevailed, 5-0, in the second game.
In the opener, junior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) went 2 for 3 while junior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) doubled and scored.
Freshman pitcher Katie Watts (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) started for Grove City and allowed five runs in two innings. She took the setback. Freshman Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) pitched five innings of relief for the Wolverines.
Geneva (11-8, 5-1 PAC) broke open the nightcap by scoring three unearned runs in the fifth inning against freshman pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon). Aughton threw a complete game for Grove City, yielding two earned runs in six innings.
Shirey paced the offense by going 2 for 3.
Grove City (4-13, 0-6 PAC) will host Saint Vincent Thursday in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
