Grove City drops two on road
CRESSON, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team closed the non-conference portion of the 2014 season Thursday afternoon by dropping a doubleheader at Mount Aloysius (22-10). Grove City fell in Game One, 6-4, and dropped a 3-2 decision in the nightcap.
In Game Two, Grove City trailed 1-0 entering the top of the sixth but took the lead on consecutive run-scoring groundouts by sophomore right fielder Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and freshman third baseman Alaina Kunselman (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank Valley).
However, Mount Aloysius scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to snatch the victory.
Junior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) went 2 for 3 for Grove City. Freshman first baseman Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) and junior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) both scored runs.
Freshman pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) allowed two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings in the circle for Grove City. She took the setback.
Grove City fell behind 6-1 in the opener but cut the margin to 6-3 in the sixth inning when junior catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) cracked a two-run triple that scored Aughton and Shirey.
In the seventh, freshman right fielder Madison Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) led off with a triple and later scored on a groundout by junior center fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West).
The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the third when Vidovic singled and later came home on a groundout by sophomore left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).
Morris finished 2 for 2 and Shirey went 2 for 3. Aughton pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs and six hits over six innings. She struck out five but took the setback.
Grove City (8-21) returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday at Thiel.
