Grove City opens season in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the 2014 season March 1-8 by competing in nine games at the National Training Center. The Wolverines went 3-6 during the week, including a trip-ending 2-1 victory over Adrian Friday afternoon.

Grove City opened the trip March 3 by dropping a 3-1 decision to DeSales. The Wolverines then fell to Rose-Hulman, 3-0.

The next day, Grove City rebounded to earn two victories. Grove City whipped Widener, 11-2, before earning a 4-1 win over Regis. Wednesday, the Wolverines fell to Moravian (16-4) and Emerson (4-2). Thursday, Lebanon Valley earned a rain-filled 7-0 win over Grove City.

The Wolverines closed the trip Friday by splitting a pair of games. After an 8-1 setback against St. Benedict, Grove City pulled out a 2-1 win over Adrian.

Junior catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) helped lead the Grove City offense by hitting .333 with four doubles and five runs batted in. Freshman Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) hit a team-best .364 during the trip.

The Grove City pitching staff compiled a 2.75 aggregate earned run average during the week and yielded just 56 hits in 61 innings. Opposing batters hit just .232 against Grove City.

In Grove City's victory over Adrian, Aughton fired a two-hitter while allowing no earned runs and no walks. Grove City earned the win when junior center fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West) scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh.

The Wolverines earned their first win of the season by jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning against Widener. Junior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) tripled twice while going 3 for 3 while sophomore left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) belted a pair of doubles and knocked in four runs.

Freshman third baseman Alaina Kunselman (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank Valley) added two hits for Grove City.

Freshman Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) allowed two unearned runs in six innings, earning the win.

 Morris and junior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) both went 3 for 4 with a double in the victory over Regis. Freshman Katy Gibson (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) also collected three hits in the win.

Freshman Katie Watts (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) fired a three-hitter against Regis and did not yield an earned run.

Morris doubled against DeSales while Shirey collected a pair of hits against Rose-Hulman. Lynskey doubled and singled against Moravian and junior center fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) added two singles.

Gibson drove in both two runs against Emerson while Rayburn tripled and singled against Saint Benedict.

Grove City will open the northern portion of its schedule March 18 at Pitt-Greensburg.
