Thomas More tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Monday afternoon by dropping both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Thomas More at College Field. Thomas More (15-9, 6-0 PAC) pulled out a 2-1 win in the opener and then took Game Two, 15-1.

Sophomore pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) fired a complete game for Grove City but took the setback. Aughton allowed two runs in seven innings.

Thomas More jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the first in Game Two. Grove City (8-5, 0-2) broke through in the bottom of the first when senior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) singled and later scored on a single by senior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).

Shirey also doubled for Grove City, which had six hits in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Watts (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) started and took the defeat for Grove City. Junior Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) and Aughton both pitched in relief.
