Grove City tops Geneva in extra innings

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory of the 2015 season Wednesday evening by pulling out a 3-1 victory at Geneva (13-12, 3-2 PAC) in nine innings. Darkness prevented the teams from playing Game Two of the doubleheader.

Grove City broke the 1-1 tie by scoring twice in the top of the ninth. Freshman third baseman Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) walked with the bases loaded, bringing home senior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) with the go-ahead run.

Sophomore first baseman Katie Watts (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) pushed the lead to 3-1 by singling in senior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia).

Sophomore pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) then retired Geneva in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win. Aughton fired a complete game and allowed just seven hits in the win. She struck out three and walked one.

Grove City (9-5, 1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when senior catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) cracked a solo home run. Morris finished the game 2 for 3.

Wednesday's game started well after its original 3:30 p.m. start time due to inclement weather. The second game between Grove City and Geneva will be rescheduled for a later date.

Grove City will host Bethany in conference play Friday afternoon.
