Another split for Grove City

LATROBE, Pa. -- For the second straight day, the Grove City College softball team earned a split of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on the road as the Wolverines visited Saint Vincent Wednesday afternoon. After dropping the opener, 1-0, Grove City rebounded for a 7-3 victory in Game Two.

Grove City pounded out 16 hits in the nightcap as five Wolverines posted multi-hit games. Senior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) went 4 for 4 with two triples, a double and two runs scored. Senior right fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and freshman first baseman Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) both went 3 for 4 while senior catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and junior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) each had two hits.

Grove City took the lead for good in the sixth by breaking a 3-3 tie. Lent singled and later scored on a run-scoring hit from senior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley). The Wolverines then broke open the game in the seventh as Gmuer, Lent and Lynskey all cracked run-scoring singles.

Sophomore pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) earned the win by throwing a complete game. She did not walk a batter in seven innings and fanned two.

Shirey doubled and singled in the opener but Grove City finished with just four hits. Aughton threw a three-hitter in the circle but took the setback. She walked one and struck out two in six innings.

Tuesday, the Wolverines split a doubleheader at conference foe Waynesburg. The Wolverines have split each of their last three league twinbills.

Grove City (12-8, 4-5 PAC) will host Geneva in a single conference game Friday at 5 p.m. That game will complete the teams' doubleheader that began April 8 in Beaver Falls, Pa.
