Grove City whips Westminster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team improved to 14-9 overall Saturday afternoon by taking both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Westminster (19-11, 9-5 PAC) at College Field. Grove City (6-6 PAC) rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener and then secured a 4-0 victory in Game Two.
In the opener, Grove City trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth but surged ahead by scoring twice with two outs. Senior right fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) singled home freshman third baseman Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) with the tying run while senior second baseman Allison Rayburn (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) followed by driving in senior center fielder Caitlyn Vidovic (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Lutheran West).
Sophomore pitcher Katie Watts (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) then retired Westminster in order in the seventh to sew up the victory. Watts (5-4) threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs and five hits in seven innings.
Sophomore Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) doubled and singled to help lead Grove City's 10-hit attack. Rayburn and Vidovic also had two hits each. Senior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) added a double.
Aughton yielded just five hits in Game Two as she posted her third shutout of the season. She did not walk a batter in seven innings in the circle.
Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when Lent walked and later scored on an error. Rayburn ignited Grove City's three-run third inning by leading off with a double. She scored when Aughton reached on an error. Aughton scored Grove City's third run on a double by senior catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).
Later in the inning, junior Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in freshman pinch runner Michaela Cashmer (Weedville, Pa./Elk County Catholic) with a run-scoring groundout.
Morris and Lent both had two hits for Grove City, which completed its first home sweep of Westminster since the Titans joined the conference in 2000. Overall, Grove City has won six of the last eight meetings against Westminster.
Grove City will host conference foe Bethany at 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
