Grove City battles Bethany in twinbill
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team moved to 8-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by dropping a 7-4 decision to visiting Bethany Thursday afternoon in the opening game of a conference doubleheader at College Field. Darkness halted the second game after eight innings with the game tied 4-4. A date for completing the second game has not been set.
In Game Two, Grove City (16-10, 8-7 PAC) trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the third but the Wolverines erupted for four runs. Sophomore pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) opened the scoring by singling in senior right fielder Erica Gmuer (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton). Aughton and senior shortstop Kelsey Shirey (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) both then scored when senior catcher Sarah Morris (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) cracked a two-run double.
Freshman Lauren Hughes (Twinsburg, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) put Grove City ahead by driving in freshman third baseman Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) with a run-scoring single.
Bethany tied the game in the seventh, forcing extra innings. In the eighth, the Bison (19-14, 10-5 PAC) loaded the bases but Aughton escaped the jam. Aughton allowed three earned runs in eight innings. She struck out four.
Morris went 3 for 4 while Shirey and Aughton each had a pair of hits.
In the opener, Grove City forged a 4-4 tie in the fourth by scoring three times. Morris's run-scoring double ignited the inning while junior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) followed by singling in freshman pinch runner Michaela Cashmer (Weedville, Pa./Elk County Catholic). Lynskey later scored on an error. She finished 2 for 3.
However, Bethany scored once in the sixth and added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to seal the win. For Grove City, sophomore pitcher Katie Watts (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) threw a complete game but took the setback. She allowed three earned runs in seven innings.
Grove City will host conference rival Thiel at 1 p.m. Saturday.
