Wolverines open with sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team opened the 2016 season Wednesday afternoon by earning a sweep of visiting Penn State Beaver in non-conference action at College Field. Grove City (2-0) earned a 2-1 win in the opener and then secured a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when a two-out error scored junior center fielder Madison Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and sophomore shortstop Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton).

Junior third baseman Casey Woodcock (Durhamville, N.Y./Oneida) and senior right fielder Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) both doubled for the Wolverines, who finished the game with three hits.

Junior pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) fired a three-hitter to earn her first win since 2014. Wootton, who missed 2015 due to injury, struck out five in seven innings.

Woodcock helped lead Grove City's 10-hit outburst in Game Two by going 3 for 3 and scoring twice. Senior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) also singled three times and drove in two runs.

Junior pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) allowed one earned run in seven innings while securing the win. She struck out six.

Grove City will host Mount Union at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader.
