Grove City drops twinbill

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Hiram. Hiram earned a 5-2 win in Game One, then rallied for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

In Game Two, Grove City (2-4) led 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth but Hiram scored once in that inning and then scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior right fielder Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) went 2 for 3 and knocked in two runs in the nightcap while junior Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) doubled and scored two runs.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead when sophomore shortstop Breanna Lent (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) singled and later scored on a single by junior third baseman Casey Woodcock (Durhamville, N.Y./Oneida). In the fourth inning, Rothbard singled in Aughton with the Wolverines' second run. Rothbard also signled in Aughton in the sixth, giving Grove City a 3-1 lead.

Junior pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. She struck out two and walked none.

In the opener, junior center fielder Madison Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) went 3 for 3 while junior catcher Alaina Kunselman (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank Valley) doubled and singled.

Aughton allowed one earned run over six innings. She struck out one and did not issue a walk.

Grove City returns to action April 1 at La Roche.
