Grove City falls at La Roche

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at La Roche. La Roche took the opener 14-4 and then picked up a 10-2 win in Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City fell behind 4-0 before rallying to tie the game in the fourth inning. Freshman shortstop Julia Buggey (Indiana, Pa./Homer-Center) and junior center fielder Madison Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) both cracked run-scoring singles that closed the lead to 4-2. Junior pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) then tied the game with a two-run single.

However, La Roche reclaimed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Redhawks sewed up the game with a six-run outburst in the sixth.

Senior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) went 2 for 3 for Grove City. Aughton took the pitching setback, allowing 10 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

In Game Two, Aughton tripled while sophomore Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) went 2 for 3. La Roche broke open the game with another six-run sixth inning.

Junior pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) pitched 5 2/3 innings and took the setback. She allowed nine earned runs.

Grove City (2-6 overall) will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Thiel. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
