Grove City drops doubleheader

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Thomas More. Grove City fell in the opener, 8-2, then suffered a 3-0 setback in the second game.

In the nightcap, Thomas More (22-6, 7-1 PAC) broke a scoreless tie by scoring once in the fifth inning and then two more runs in the sixth. Grove City junior pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) yielded just two earned runs in six innings. She struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Senior right fielder Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) doubled for Grove City (3-10, 0-4), which had three hits in Game Two.

In Game One, Grove City scored twice in the top of the third to forge a 2-2 tie. Senior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled in sophomore second baseman Michaela Cashmer (Weedville, Pa./Elk County Catholic) to open the scoring. Two batters later, Aughton walked with the bases loaded to force home Rothbard.

However, Thomas More reclaimed the lead with a run in the fifth and broke open the game by scoring five times in the sixth.

Junior pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) pitched six innings for Grove City, allowing six earned runs. She struck out two and walked three.

Grove City returns home Saturday to host archrival Geneva in a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader at College Field.
