Wolverines fall twice to Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Geneva at the College Softball Field. The Wolverines (3-12, 0-6 PAC) lost the opener 6-4 before falling 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

In the opener, Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of first as junior first baseman/pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) hit a two-run single and junior catcher Alaina Kunselman (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank Valley) followed with an RBI-single. Geneva would get a pair back in the top of the third to close within 3-2, but the Wolverines would remain on top through five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Geneva tied the game on a Clara Sevy double to deep center and took the lead one batter later on an Ashley Grow two-run home run to left field to make it a 5-3 game. The Golden Tornadoes added another run in the top of the seventh on a Wolverine error to extend their lead to 6-3.

The Wolverine would threaten in the bottom of the second, as senior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled to lead off the inning and, after an out, advanced to second on a single by sophomore shortstop Breanna Lent (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton). Both runners advanced on a double steal, allowing Lynskey to score on an Aughton RBI-groundout and bring Grove City within 6-4, but the Golden Tornado defense snagged its second infield lineout of the inning to end the game.

Aughton went 2 of 4 with three RBIs in the opener while Lynskey also recorded two hits. Junior pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and five walks while striking out four in seven innings.

In the nightcap, Geneva took advantage of six Grove City errors to score at least one run in all five innings. Meanwhile, the Wolverine offense managed just three hits.

Aughton took the loss in game two, despite allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out four in four and one third innings of work.

Grove City visits Thiel on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. PAC doubleheader.
