Grove City falls on road

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Thiel. The Wolverines took a 5-1 setback in the opener before falling in Game Two, 9-1.

In the opener, Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior first baseman Casey Woodcock (Durhamville, N.Y./Oneida) singled in senior left fielder Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny).

Thiel tied the game in the bottom of the first and then surged ahead with a four-run sixth inning.

Junior pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) struck out six in six innings for Grove City. She walked none but absorbed the defeat.

Grove City broke through in the fifth inning of Game Two when junior catcher Alaina Kunselman (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank Valley) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Lynskey. Thiel had earlier scored twice in the first inning, four runs in the second and three more runs in the third inning.

Junior pitcher Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) doubled and singled for the Wolverines. Wootton pitched 2 1/3 innings and yielded eight earned runs. Aughton pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson for a conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
