Wootton, Aughton lead Wolverines to split with Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior pitchers Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) and Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) both had strong days on the mound as the Grove City College softball team snapped its losing skid and earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference win of the season with a doubleheader split with Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon at College Field. The Wolverines dropped the opener 1-0 before winning the second game 2-1.

In the opener, Grove City committed an error in the top of the first that led to Waynesburg's lone run. The Wolverines out-hit the Jackets 6-4 and had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, but junior center fielder Madison Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) was thrown out at home trying to score on a groundball.

Wootton allowed just four hits and the one unearned run over seven innings to take the hard-luck loss, striking out four in the process. Brubaker went 3 for 3 to lead the Wolverine attack.

In the nightcap, Waynesburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but this time, the Wolverines were able to rally. Brubaker led off the bottom of the fifth with a bloop single just fair in shallow right field and advanced to third as sophomore shortstop Michaela Cashmer (Weedville, Pa./Elk County Catholic) reached on an error. Cashmer stole second to set the table for freshman third baseman Julia Buggey (Indiana, Pa./Homer-Center), who singled into center field to bring both runs home and give Grove City a 2-1 lead.

That would prove to be enough, as Aughton got a timely strikeout for the second out after giving up a pair of hits in the top of the seventh and then got a popup to secure the win.

Aughton allowed just five hits and one run over seven innings of work while striking out five and walking three.

Grove City visits Westminster Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
