Grove City closes season with Senior Day sweep of Chatham
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College softball team sent senior outfielders Megan Lynskey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Emily Rothbard (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) off in style by sweeping Chatham in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at College Field in their season finale. The Wolverines won the opener 9-1 in five innings before pulling out a 1-0 victory in the second game.
In the opener, jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Lynskey and junior center fielder Madison Brubaker (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) both singled and junior pitcher Erika Aughton (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) drew a walk to load the bases. Junior first baseman Casey Woodcock (Durhamville, N.Y./Oneida) drew an RBI-walk to get the Wolverines on the board, and sophomore Breanna Lent (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) followed with a two-run double to push the lead to three.
The Wolverine advantage grew to 7-0 in the bottom of the second as the Wolverines took advantage of four Cougar errors to score four runs. Chatham got on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, but the Wolverines would score twice in the bottom of the fifth on RBI-singles by Aughton and Woodcock to push the lead to 9-1 and end the game by the eight-run rule.
Lent was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs to lead the Wolverine offense in game one while Woodcock also drove in a pair. Rothbard was 1 for 3 with a double while Lynskey and Brubaker each went 1 for 3 with three runs scored.
Aughton earned the win in the circle for Grove City, allowing just one run while scattering six hits over five innings of action and striking out five.
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Grove City junior Aimee Wootton (Weiser, Idaho/Weiser) and Chatham's Samantha Crilley as Grove City jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead and made that lead stick for a 1-0 victory. Brubaker and Lent drew consecutive one-out walks and Aughton loaded the bases with a single through the infield. Junior catcher Alaina Kunselman (New Bethlehem, Pa./Redbank Valley) was then able to drive a ball deep enough to center field for the sacrifice fly to allow Brubaker to score.
That would be the only offense Grove City would need, as Wootton had the best game of her collegiate career, throwing a two-hit shutout and striking out a career-high nine batters while allowing just a single walk.
Aughton and Kunselman each had a pair of hits in the nightcap while Lynskey added Grove City's remaining hit.
The Wolverines conclude the 2016 season 6-23 overall and 3-15 in PAC action. Grove City loses Lynskey and Rothbard to graduation.
