
One up and one down at John
Carroll
CLEVELAND, OH, September 15, 2000--Sophomore Cara Denniston (Grove City,
PA/Grove City) recorded 69 assists and eight serving aces as the Lady Wolverines
went 1-1 in first-day action at the John Carroll Tournament on Friday.
Grove City opened with a four-game win over Kenyon, 15-8, 15-5, 10-15, 15-7. Denniston had 30 assists and five aces, while junior Casey Engelbert (Warren, PA/Warren Country Christian) posted a team-high 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) contributed six kills and four blocks.
In the nightcap against Division III-power Calvin, the Lady Wolverines tied the match with a win in game two, but the Lady Knights prevailed in four close ones, 15-12, 13-15, 15-12, 17-15. Denniston collected 39 assists and three aces. Juniors Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) led the way in kills with 15 and 12, respectively. Summers added eight kills and seven blocks.
Grove City will open Saturday's play at 9:00 a.m. against Baldwin-Wallace and then close the tournament at 3:45 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
