Lady Wolverines place
fourth at Juniata
HUNTINGDON, PA, September 30, 2000--The Grove City College women's volleyball team won three of four matches over the weekend to place fourth at the eighth-annual Juniata College ASICS Invitational.
Three of the four matches were decided in five games as the Lady Wolverines improved to 12-7 overall. After dropping its opening match to Franklin & Marshall (15-10, 12-15, 16-14, 13-15, 13-15), Grove City rallied with victories over Brockport (14-16, 15-12, 13-15, 15-7, 15-10), York (17-15, 15-8, 15-9) and Western Maryland (15-8, 8-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-11).
Freshman Lisa Bodi (Springville, NY/Springville Griffith Institute) registered a team-high 15 kills in the loss to F&M which snapped the Lady Wolverines' five-match winning streak. Juniors Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while sophomore Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) had 49 assists. Porter added 24 digs.
Gardner keyed the win over Brockport with 18 kills. Junior Casey Engelbert (Warren, PA/Warren County Christian) chipped in with 12 kills and Porter added 11. Denniston contributed 39 assists.
Gardner and Porter evenly split 22 kills in the three-game sweep over York. Gardner also tallied four blocks, while Porter had 15 digs and three aces. Denniston totaled 33 helpers.
In the finale, Gardner shared the spotlight with sophomore Kirsten Pederson (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) as each recorded 18 kills in the five-game win over Western Maryland. Denniston's 52 assists gave her 173 for the tournament.
