Lady Wolverines advance to ECAC semis
PITTSBURGH, PA, November 10, 2000--The fourth-seeded
Lady Wolverine volleyball team took its first step toward a third ECAC women's volleyball
title on Friday, defeating fifth-seeded Western Maryland, 3-2, at Carnegie Mellon in
Pittsburgh.
Grove City (20-12) advances to Saturday's semifinals to face top-seeded and host Carnegie Mellon at 10:00 a.m. The championship match will be played Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The Lady Wolverines, who defeated Western Maryland in five earlier this season, claimed the first two games of the playoff, 15-12, 16-14, dropped the next two 11-15, 6-15, then cruised 15-6 in the decisive game.
Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) and Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) led the way with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Summers added five blocks and Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) recorded 55 assists.
The Presidents' Athletic Conference champion
Lady Wolverines won ECAC titles in 1994 and 1995.
