GCC goes down with heads up

GROVE CITY, PA, September 4, 2000--The Grove City College women's volleyball team lost its season opener to perennial power Mount Union College Tuesday night, but not without a fight.

The Lady Wolverines led by as many as 10 points in the opening game, before falling 30-28 in the new rally scoring format.  The Purple Raiders took the second game, 30-21, to go up 2-0, but Grove City recovered with a 30-19 victory in the third set.  The two teams went back and forth in Game Four before Mount Union pulled out another nail-biter, 30-28.

Senior Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) led the way for Grove City, recording a team-high 14 kills and five serving aces.  Junior Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) and senior Julie Porter (Medina, OHHighland) posted nine and seven kills, respectively.  Junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) was credited with 35 assists.  Gardner and Summers added two blocks apiece, while junior Kirsten Pedersen (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery), freshman Kate DiMarco (Slate Hill, NY/Minisink Valley), Denniston and Porter each contributed a pair of aces. 

Grove City, 0-1, competes at the Baldwin-Wallace College Invitational Friday and Saturday.  Mount Union, 26-9 a year ago, improved to 4-1.
