UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH, September 15, 2001--The Grove City College women's volleyball team finished 1-2 at the two-day John Carroll University/Case Western Reserve University Invitational.
The Lady Wolverines were eliminated in their first match on Saturday, falling in three games to Denison University, 30-25, 30-25, 30-24. Seniors Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) recorded 11 and nine kills, respectively, to lead GCC. Junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) posted 28 assists and Porter added a team-high 23 digs.
Grove City opened the tournament Friday with a 3-1 loss to Calvin College by scores of 30-18, 23-30, 30-21, 30-26. Porter registered a team-best 16 kills and Gardner chipped in with 14 kills. Denniston rung up 40 assists, while juniors Kirsten Pedersen (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) and Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) had 25 and 21 digs, respectively.
The Lady Wolverines notched their lone victory over the weekend in Friday's nightcap, sweeping Hanover College, 30-28, 30-16, 30-19. Pacing the team were Gardner with 15 kills, Denniston with 38 assists and Porter with 21 digs.
Grove City's overall record moved to 3-5.
