GCC takes two at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, PA, September 28, 2001--The Grove City College women's volleyball team needed just six games to claim a pair of victories on the opening day of the 2001 Juniata College Tournament.  The Lady Wolverines defeated NCAA Division II Millersville University in the first match, 30-22, 30-18, 30-26, and beat Western Maryland College in the nightcap, 30-22, 30-22, 30-16.

In the opener, senior Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) sparked the victory with a team-high 12 kills and 19 digs.  Junior Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) contributed 17 digs and a team-best six blocks.   Junior Kirsten Pedersen (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) chipped in with nine kills and junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) recorded 24 assists.

Porter and senior Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) each posted a dozen kills in the second sweep, helped by Denniston's 38 assists.  Summers was credited with eight blocks, while Pedersen, Porter and freshman Kate DiMarco (Slate Hill, NY/Minisink Valley) posted 10 digs apiece.

The wins gave head coach Susan Roberts 400 victories in her 17 seasons at Grove City, 452 in her 19-year coaching career.

The Lady Wolverines, now 9-5 overall, will look to extend a six-match winning streak when they open Saturday's play against York College at 9:00 a.m.
