Win streak hits eight with two more sweeps

HUNTINGDON, PA, September 29, 2001--Two weeks ago the Lady Wolverine volleyball team returned home from the John Carroll Invitational after losing for the fifth time in eight matches.  Today, the same team left the Juniata Invitational with an eight-match winning streak and 19 consecutive games won.

Grove City, who improved to 11-5 overall,  polished off a perfect 4-0 weekend at Juniata with another pair of sweeps Saturday, defeating York College, 30-24, 30-17, 30-22, and SUNY-Brockport, 30-23, 30-27, 30-28. 

In the match against York, senior Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) and junior Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) paced the team with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.  Summers added eight blocks for the second straight match, including four solos.  Porter and junior Kirsten Pedersen (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) contributed 24 and 21 digs, respectively, while junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) rung up 39 assists and 20 digs.

Senior Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) recorded a team-high 17 kills, 23 digs and eight blocks in the win over Brockport.  Summers added 13 kills and six blocks, while Denniston set up half of the points won, finishing with 45 assists.  Pedersen chipped in with 19 digs.

The Lady Wolverines are riding their longest winning streak since stringing together 13 straight victories in 1995.  Grove City, who has posted six straight sweeps, last surrendered a game on Sep. 20 against Thiel.
