GCC posts comeback victory at W&J

WASHINGTON, PA, October 11, 2001--The Grove City College women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat league-rival Washington & Jefferson College, 3-2, Thursday night in Washington.

Junior Kirsten Pedersen (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) delivered the game-winning kill in the fifth game as the Lady Wolverines secured the top seed at the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, Oct. 26-27.  The Crimson and White improved to 7-0 in the PAC, 14-7 overall.  W&J fell to 5-15 overall, 2-5 in the PAC.

After winning the first set by a decisive 30-16 margin, Grove City dropped the next two games by identical 30-27 scores.  The Lady Wolverines evened the match by taking the fourth set, 30-25, and won the rubber game, 15-12.  The last Grove City match to go five games was its 3-2 victory over Western Maryland in the first round of the ECAC playoffs last year (Nov. 10).

Junior Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) recorded 17 kills to lead GCC, while Pedersen finished with 13 kills.  Junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) had 49 set assists, while seniors Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) and Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) finished with 32 and 27 digs, respectively.

Grove City, who defeated W&J in three games on Sep. 25, hadn't swept a season series from the Presidents since 1995.

The Lady Wolverines host nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon University tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
