GCC claims second straight PAC volleyball crown

GREENVILLE, PA, October 27, 2001--The Lady Wolverine volleyball team secured back-to-back league titles for the first time since 1992-93 on Saturday, defeating Waynesburg College in four games at Thiel College's Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasium, 31-29, 27-30, 31-29, 30-18.

Grove City, who improved to 19-11 overall, repeated as Presidents' Athletic Conference champion, despite losing senior Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) early in the first set after the 2001 PAC Most Valuable Player sprained her left ankle.

Junior Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) picked up the slack and recorded a team-high 23 kills and 10 blocks, including seven solos.  Senior Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) registered 14 kills and a team-best 27 digs, while junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) contributed 52 set assists.

The Lady Wolverines advanced to the title match after sweeping Thiel in the semis earlier in the day, 30-16, 30-25, 30-14.  Gardner led the way with 18 kills, Summers posted 10 kills and Denniston had 35 assists.  Porter and Denniston finished with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

Gardner was announced as this year's league MVP prior to the championship match.  Gardner was joined by Denniston on the PAC First Team, while Summers and Porter were voted to the PAC Second Team.

Grove City's 17th-year head coach Susan Roberts was named PAC Coach of the Year.  Roberts has led the Lady Wolverines to nine PAC championships and 410 match victories.
