L'Wolves advance to ECAC volleyball semis

BETHLEHEM, PA, November 9, 2001--Junior Katie Summers (Staunton, VA/Grace Christian) recorded a team-high 23 kills as the sixth-seeded Grove City College women's volleyball team (20-11) upset third-seeded Johns Hopkins University (16-15) in four games in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Championship, hosted by Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA.

The Lady Wolverines advance to the semifinals to face second-seeded Franklin & Marshall College (22-10) Saturday at 4:00 p.m.  The championship match is slated for Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Grove City never trailed in the first two sets, winning by margins of 30-20 and 30-26.  The L'Wolves appeared headed for a three-game sweep before the Blue Jays rallied in the middle of the third game and won, 30-21.  The lead changed several times in the fourth game before Grove City distanced itself in a 30-24 triumph.

Senior Sarah Gardner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) helped the cause with 16 kills, senior Julie Porter (Medina, OH/Highland) tallied a team-high 27 digs and junior Cara Denniston (Grove City, PA/Grove City) registered 55 assists.  Junior Kirsten Pedersen (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) contributed 23 digs.  

It marks the second year in a row that the Lady Wolverines have earned a spot in the ECAC semifinals.  They defeated Western Maryland College in five sets in last year's play-in before falling to Carnegie Mellon in the semis, 3-0.  Grove City seeks its third ECAC crown, having won titles in 1994 and 1995.
