W&J nips Grove City in PAC Tournament, 3-2
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team dropped a 31-29, 19-30, 25-30, 30-26, 15-11 decision to No. 2 seed Washington & Jefferson in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Friday night at Westminster College's Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
The third-seeded Wolverines are now 20-11 overall. W&J advances to Saturday's championship match and will face fourth-seeded Thomas More at 1 p.m. Thomas More upset top seed Westminster, 3-0, in the first semifinal Friday night.
Grove City led 2-1 after three games and led 22-17 in the fourth game. W&J rallied to force the decisive fifth game and then pulled out the match with a 15-11 win in the fifth game.
Juniors Heather Fraiz (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) and Katie Skinner (Bay Village, Ohio/Christian Community) paced Grove City with 20 kills each. Senior Carlie Roberts (Union City, Pa./Union City) recorded 16 kills while sophomore Natalie Liberati (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added a dozen kills.
Junior setter Kim Walsh (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) distributed a career-high 65 assists. The 65 assists are the second-most in one match in Grove City history.
Defensively, senior Emily Rossol (Waterville, Ohio/Toledo Christian) led Grove City with 32 digs while Fraiz added 21 digs. Skinner recorded 20 digs. Roberts had a match-high four blocks.
