Wolverines go 1-3 at OWU
DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Grove City College volleyball team opened the 2009 season Friday night and Saturday by going 1-3 in Ohio Wesleyan University's Bishop Invitational.
Friday, Grove City opened with a 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17 setback against Otterbein. In Friday's second match, the Wolverines dropped a 22-25, 28-26, 25-16, 25-21 decision to Transylvania.
Saturday, Grove City earned a four-set win over host Ohio Wesleyan, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-10. The Wolverines then closed the tournament with a three-set loss to Wooster, 27-25, 25-23 and 25-9.
Sophomore Anna McCurdy (Guys Mills, Pa./Maplewood) paced Grove City with 11 kills in Friday's opener against Otterbein. Freshman Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) added seven kills. Sophomore setter Annie Barry (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) distributed 27 assists.
Defensively, junior Kim Budd (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) paced Grove City with 18 digs while Barry and junior Inge Rasmussen (Darnestown, Md./Poolesville) each collected 13 digs.
Against Transylvania, McCurdy tallied eight kills while Willits contributed seven kills. Barry recorded 26 assists while Budd and Rasmussen each totaled 14 digs.
A balanced effort paced Grove City in the win over Ohio Wesleyan Saturday morning as sophomore Mary Masincup (Churchville, Md./Grace Christian), McCurdy, Rasmussen and Willits all had six kills. Barry tallied 28 assists. Budd's 20 digs paced the defense while junior Jodi Barry (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) had three blocks.
McCurdy and Willits both chalked up seven kills against Wooster while Annie Barry posted 22 assists. Rasmussen collected 17 digs while Budd finished with 14 digs.
Otterbein went 4-0 at the five-team round-robin tournament while Wooster finished 3-1. Transylvania went 2-2 and Ohio Wesleyan went 0-4.
Grove City will visit Geneva Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
