Wolverines earn first win

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Grove City College volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2010 season Saturday afternoon by downing Wilmington College in the seventh-place match of the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishop Invitational. The Wolverines earned a 25-12, 26-24, 25-14 triumph to improve to 1-3 on the season.

Grove City closed pool play earlier in the afternoon with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-8 setback against John Carroll.

Sophomore Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) led Grove City with 11 kills against Wilmington and freshman Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) contributed eight kills on 15 attacks. Freshman setter Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) tallied 27 assists while senior Kim Budd (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) served four aces.

Budd led Grove City with 15 digs and Branch had four blocks.

Willits collected nine kills against John Carroll. Schmidt totaled 19 assists while Budd paced the defense with 17 digs. Willits also recorded three blocks.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at Waynesburg. The match is set for 6:30 p.m.
