Grove City edges Waynesburg in conference opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night by pulling out a 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10 victory over host Waynesburg in each team's PAC opener at the Rudy Marisa Field House.

Sophomore Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) led Grove City (2-3 overall) with a career-high 23 kills. Freshman Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) recorded a season-high 11 kills. Freshman setter Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) distributed 36 assists.

Defensively, Branch, Willits and freshman Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) all posted five blocks each. The five blocks are a career high for each player. Senior libero Kim Budd (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) chalked up 28 digs and freshman Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community tallied 14 digs. Freshman Taylor Gerent (Westlake, Ohio/Christian Community) added 11 digs for Grove City, which has sole possession of first place in the conference.

Grove City will face D'Youville Friday night at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Penn State Behrend Tournament in Erie, Pa.
