Wolverines drop pair

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Penn State Behrend Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center, moving the Wolverines' record to 3-5 overall.

Grove City opened the day with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-23 setback against Carnegie Mellon. Host Penn State Behrend then handed Grove City a 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 setback in the second match of the day.

Sophomore Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) recorded 11 kills against Carnegie Mellon and freshman Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) contributed six kills. Freshman setter Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) posted 17 assists. Freshman Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) served three aces. Skinner also led the Grove City defense with 15 digs.

Freshman Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) collected a team-leading seven kills against Behrend and Willits added six. Schmidt distributed 22 assists. Skinner and senior Kim Budd (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) both had 15 digs. Freshman Taylor Gerent (Westlake, Ohio/Christian Community) added 10 digs.

Willits earned All-Tournament honors. Behrend won the team title with a 3-0 record.

Grove City will visit Bethany next Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference tri-match. Grove City faces Bethany at 1 p.m., then meets Geneva at 3 p.m.
