Wolverines win home opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team opened the 2010 home schedule by pulling out a 25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 15-8 victory over visiting Penn State Behrend (5-5) Tuesday night in the Grove City College Arena.
Freshman Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) paced Grove City with 16 kills and sophomore Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) added a dozen kills. Freshman Sarah White (West Chicago, Ill./Wheaton Academy) posted nine kills.
Freshman setter Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) recorded a season-high 44 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Kim Budd (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) tallied a career-high 44 digs. The 44 digs are the second-most in one match in Grove City history.
Freshman Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) set a new career-high with 25 digs while classmate Taylor Gerent (Westlake, Ohio/Christian Community) added 21 digs. Schmidt (13) and Willits (12) also reached double-figures in digs.
Branch collected seven blocks while Willits had four blocks. White and freshman Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) both posted three blocks each.
It is Grove City's first five-set victory at home since a 3-2 win over Thomas More in the regular season finale October 27, 2006. Penn State Behrend swept the Wolverines in their previous meeting September 11 in Erie, Pa.
Grove City will visit Allegheny Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
