Grove City splits at OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Grove City College volleyball team opened the 2011 season Friday night by going 1-1 in pool play at the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishop Invitational. Grove City opened the tournament with a hard-fought 25-18, 26-28, 12-25, 25-10, 15-13 setback against Denison.

The Wolverines then rebounded for a four-set victory over Manchester, 25-18, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-12.

Senior Mary Masincup (Churchville, Va./Grace Christian) recorded a team-high 12 kills against Denison while freshman Dalaney Algiere (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) added 10 kills. Sophomore Taylor Gerent (Westlake, Ohio/Christian Community) contributed seven kills. Sophomore setter Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) recorded 45 assists.

Defensively, Algiere and sophomore Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) each posted three blocks. Senior Heather Good (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) chalked up 20 digs and sophomore Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) had 12 digs.

Branch and Masincup each posted six kills in the win over Manchester. Schmidt tallied 30 assists while Branch and Gerent both served three aces. Good and Skinner each posted 11 digs while Branch, Schmidt and sophomore Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) all had three blocks apiece.

Grove City concludes the tournament with a pair of matches Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines meet Earlham at noon before facing host Ohio Wesleyan at 2 p.m. in the weekend finale.
