Wolverines take two at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team earned a pair of victories Friday night in the opening session of the Allegheny Invitational. Grove City began the night with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-23 victory over Frostburg State. The Wolverines then rolled past Penn State Behrend in three sets, 25-14, 26-24, 25-23.

Sophomore Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) paced Grove City (6-4) with five kills against Frostburg State. Sophomore Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) distributed 29 assists from her setter position.

Defensively, sophomore Taylor Gerent (Westlake, Ohio/Christian Community) tallied 13 digs and Schmidt had a dozen digs. Sophomore Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) added nine digs. Freshman Dalaney Algiere (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) posted three blocks.

In Friday's nightcap against Behrend, Branch recorded a team-high 10 kills. Junior Elisabeth Willits (Hatboro, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) both recorded nine kills. Schmidt had 33 assists.

Senior Heather Good (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) paced the defense with 27 digs while Willits had 14 digs and Schmidt tallied 12 digs. Algiere posted four blocks while Branch and Willits each had three blocks.

Behrend had swept Grove City in Erie, Pa., just nine days ago.

Grove City will conclude the tournament Saturday with a pair of matches. The Wolverines meet Allegheny at 10 a.m. before facing Pitt-Greensburg at noon.
