Grove City splits tri-match

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team is now 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after splitting a home tri-match Friday night in the Grove City College Arena. In the opener, PAC rival Westminster pulled out a 25-17, 30-28, 25-27, 20-25, 17-15 victory over Grove City.

The Wolverines rebounded for a 25-19, 25-22, 25-9 non-conference victory over D'Youville, however.

Four Grove City players recorded double-digit kill efforts against Westminster. Junior Elisabeth Willits (Hatboro, Pa./North Penn) led the Wolverines with 17 kills and sophomore Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) added 15. Sophomores Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) and Taylor Gerent (Westlake, Ohio/Christian Community) both had a dozen kills.

Sophomore setter Casey Schmidt (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) distributed a career-high 57 assists. Sophomore Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) served three aces while Schmidt and senior Heather Good (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) both had two aces.

Skinner led Grove City with 21 digs. Schmidt (18), Good (16) and Willits (16) also reached double digits in digs. Branch tallied five blocks while freshman Dalaney Algiere (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) had four blocks. Willits added three blocks.

Branch posted a dozen kills in Grove City's sweep of D'Youville. Senior Mary Masincup (Churchville, Va./Grace Christian) added 10 kills and Mander collected seven kills on just 11 attacks. Schmidt had 33 assists.

Masincup also paced the defense with eight kids. Good, Schmidt and freshman Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) all had seven digs. Algiere posted four blocks.

Head coach Susan Roberts now has 599 wins as a head volleyball coach, including 547 in 27 seasons at Grove City. The Wolverines will look to give Roberts her 600th victory Wednesday night, October 5 as Grove City visits Waynesburg in conference action.
