Grove City opens at OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Grove City College volleyball team opened the 2012 season Friday evening by dropping a pair of hard-fought matches in Ohio Wesleyan University's Bishop Invitational at the Branch Rickey Center.

Grove City opened play with a 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21 setback against Denison. The Wolverines then dropped a five-set bout with Manchester, 16-25, 28-26, 25-20, 26-28, 15-11.

Senior Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) paced Grove City with 13 kills against Denison. Junior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) added nine kills. Sophomore setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) recorded 18 assists and freshman setter Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) tallied 17 assists.

Junior Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) recorded 29 digs and sophomore Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) had 20 digs. Branch tallied a team-high eight total blocks.

Willits also led Grove City in Friday's nightcap with Manchester by chalking up 11 kills. Junior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) and freshman Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) both added eight kills.

Trageser recorded 18 assists and Collins had 16.

Defensively, Trenta led Grove City with 28 digs. Freshman Christa Currier (Rifle, Colo./Coal Ridge) posted seven blocks and Branch added six rejections.

Grove City will face Earlham Saturday at 12 p.m. before concluding the tournament with a 2 p.m. match against host Ohio Wesleyan.
