Grove City opens league play with split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday by splitting a pair of matches in the Grove City College Arena. Grove City (3-4, 1-1 PAC) opened the day with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 setback against visiting Thiel. Grove City rebounded to sweep Waynesburg, 25-13, 25-15, 25-17.

Junior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) led Grove City with eight kills in the win over Waynesburg. Senior Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), junior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) and freshman Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) all had five kills each.

Sophomore setter Amy Collins (Landenbeg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) tallied 18 assists. Collins and Willits both served two aces.

Defensively, Branch recorded a team-high nine blocks. Galens had six blocks and Rangel added five. Freshman Christa Currier (Rifle, Colo./Coal Ridge) contributed four blocks. Junior libero Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) led the defense with 11 digs.

Branch also led Grove City with seven kills in Saturday's opener against Thiel. Collins had 12 assists and freshman Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added nine assists. Skinner led the defense with a dozen digs. Currier had seven blocks.

Grove City will host Penn State Behrend Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
