Grove City sweeps FDU-Florham, stuns Cortland State

YORK, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team improved to 9-6 overall Friday night by earning a pair of victories at the York College of Pennsylvania Invitational. Grove City opened the night with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-23 victory over Farleigh Dickinson-Florham. The Wolverines then pulled out a five-set victory over No. 9 Cortland State (18-2) in the nightcap, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 12-25, 15-13.

Senior Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) helped pace Grove City in its win over Cortland State by recording 16 kills and junior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) added 15 kills. Sophomore setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and freshman setter Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) both recorded 21 assists. Trageser also served three aces.

Defensively, junior libero Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) collected a season-high 30 digs and Willits added 14 digs. Rangel and freshman Christa Currier (Rifle, Colo./Coal Ridge) both had two blocks.

Cortland State finished 42-2 last year and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Grove City had not played the Red Dragons since 1998.

The Wolverines rolled past FDU-Florham in the opener behind 11 kills from junior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) and eight kills by Willits. Collins distributed 19 assists and sophomore Rebecca Nelson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) had seven assists.

Skinner led the defense with 16 digs while sophomore Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) added 10 digs. Currier had a team-high three blocks.

Grove City will face Stevenson at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. A victory would put the Wolverines in the 4 p.m. championship match. Stevenson lost in five sets to Cortland State but swept FDU-Florham Friday night.
