Wolverines sweep tri-match

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team improved to 12-12 overall Saturday by picking up two victories in a home tri-match at the Grove City College Arena. The Wolverines opened the day with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-16 victory over visiting Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Grove City then swept Franciscan, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22.

Junior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) paced Grove City with 12 kills against Chatham and junior Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) contributed 10 kills. Sophomore setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) recorded 21 assists.

Junior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) tallied a team-high four blocks. Junior libero Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) had a team-leading nine digs. Freshman Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) added eight digs.

Branch recorded nine kills in the win over Franciscan while Mander collected seven kills. Galens and Rangel each had six kills. Collins set 15 assists and freshman Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) tallied 12 assists.

Sophomore Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) led Grove City with 10 digs in the nightcap and Skinner added nine digs. Branch had five blocks.

The Wolverines had not faced Franciscan since 1987. Grove City now leads the all-time series 2-0.

Grove City will visit conference foe Thiel Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Greenville, Pa.
