Wolverines close regular season with split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team closed the 2012 regular season Saturday afternoon by splitting a home tri-match in the Grove City College Arena. Grove City opened the day with a 28-26, 25-20, 25-14 setback against Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Geneva.

The Wolverines (14-16) then rebounded for a 26-24, 25-16, 25-23 non-conference victory over Allegheny in the finale.

Junior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) led Grove City with 14 kills while senior Elisabeth Willits (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) added seven kills.

Sophomore setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) posted 15 assists and freshman Amy Trageser setter (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added 12 assists.

Junior libero Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) led the Wolverine defense with 16 digs and sophomore Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) added 11 digs. Junior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) recorded a team-high four blocks.

Willits led Grove City with 10 kills in the opener against Geneva. Branch and Rangel each aded six kills. Collins tallied 17 assists. Trenta led the defense with nine digs.

Grove City is now 7-11 in the conference. The Wolverines are currently sixth in the conference and need Saint Vincent to lose to Thomas More Sunday afternoon in order to advance into next week's conference tournament. Saint Vincent owns a 6-11 league record. The Bearcats would have the head-to-head tiebreaker on Grove City if the teams finished tied.

The conference tournament begins Tuesday night with quarterfinal action. The sixth seed, either Grove City or Saint Vincent, will play at No. 3 Bethany at 7 p.m.
