Grove City earns split

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Grove City College volleyball team moved its record to 3-4 overall Saturday afternoon by splitting a pair of matches in the Marietta College Tournament at Ban Johnson Field House. The Wolverines opened with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-14 setback against Marietta.

However, Grove City rebounded to earn a 19-25, 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 15-10 triumph over Frostburg State in Saturday's nightcap.

Senior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) led Grove City with 17 kills against Frostburg State and sophomore Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) contributed 10 kills.

Junior setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) recorded 21 assists and sophomore setter Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) collected 16 assists.

Senior libero Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) had 20 digs defensively and Galens added 19 digs. Branch and sophomore Christa Currier (Rifle, Colo./Coal Ridge) both had four blocks.

Senior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) led Grove City with seven kills and Galens added five in the opener against Marietta. Collins had 13 assists and Trageser added nine. Skinner led the defense with 21 digs and junior Hannah Liermann (Manor, Pa./Hempfield) had 16 digs. Branch had three blocks.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at Thiel. The match starts at 7 p.m.
