Balanced effort carries Grove City past Thiel on Senior Night

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team improved to 15-13 overall Thursday night by earning a 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-10 victory over visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Five Grove City players recorded at least eight kills in Thursday night's win. Junior Dalaney Algiere (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) paced the Wolverines with 10 kills while seniors Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian), Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) and Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) all had eight kills each. Sophomore Elisabeth Casey (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) also recorded eight kills.

Junior setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) recorded 30 assists and sophomore Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added eight assists.

Senior Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) led the Grove City defense with a career-high 35 digs while Casey collected 21 digs. Trageser had 13 digs and junior Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) added 11 digs. Algiere tallied five blocks.

Prior to the match, Grove City honored Branch, Mander, Rangel and Skinner as part of Senior Night festivities.

Thursday night's match also marked the final home regular season match for 29th-year head coach Susan Roberts, who will retire at the end of the 2013-14 academic year.

Grove City (8-9 PAC) concludes the 2013 regular season Saturday afternoon at Saint Vincent. The match begins at 4 p.m. Both Grove City and Saint Vincent (8-9) clinched berths in next week's conference tournament with their respective wins Thursday night. The winner of Saturday's match will be the No. 5 seed while the other team will be the sixth seed in the six-team draw.
