Wolverines go 1-1 at ECAC tournament
BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College volleyball team concluded the 2013 season Saturday afternoon by going 1-1 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest Championship Tournament, hosted by Bethany College at Hummel Field House.
Grove City (16-16) opened the day with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 setback in the semifinals against Marymount. The Wolverines bounced back in the consolation match, however, and earned a 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 victory over McDaniel.
Senior Tierza Rangel (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore Central) paced Grove City in the nightcap by posting 11 kills while junior Dalaney Algiere (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) added 10 kills. Senior Ashley Branch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) contributed eight kills.
Junior setter Amy Collins (Landenberg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) recorded 18 assists and sophomore Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) posted 17 assists. Collins and senior Tara Skinner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Christian Community) both served two aces.
Skinner led the defense with 16 digs and Trageser had nine digs. Algiere collected four blocks.
Rangel led Grove City with eight kills in the opener against Marymount while Branch had seven kills. Senior Shelby Mander (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) added six kills. Collins led the way with 18 assists and Trageser had seven.
Junior Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) led the Wolverine defense with 16 digs in the opener. Skinner and Trageser both had 11 digs. Branch and Rangel both had two blocks.Grove City will lose Branch, Mander, Rangel and Skinner to graduation.
