Wolverines fall to Thomas More, top W&J in tri-match
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference home matches on Saturday in the Grove City College Arena, falling to Thomas More 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) before holding on for a 3-2 win over Washington & Jefferson (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 16-25, 15-8).
The Wolverines (12-10, 5-6 PAC) would battle point-for-point with the Saints (19-3, 9-1) througb each of the three sets, but the defending conference champions would manage to hold the Wolverines at bay for a hard-fought 3-0 victory.
Freshman Jamie Robatisin (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the Wolverines with 13 kills and 19 digs while junior Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) added seven kills and team-highs of 22 digs and four blocks. Junior setter Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added 27 assists and 16 digs against the Saints while senior libero Frances Trenta (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) posted 15 digs.
Against W&J, Grove City stormed out to a 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets 25-18 and 25-20, but the Presidents (11-6, 5-5) battled back to take the third set 25-22 and the fourth 25-16 to force a decisive fifth set. The Wolverines jumped out to a commanding 8-1 lead and then held on for a 15-8 victory to seal the important conference victory.
Galens posted a match and career-high 19 kills with just three errors on 44 attempts and added 21 digs to lead four Wolverines in double-digit kills against the Presidents. Robatisin posted 11 kills and 23 digs while senior Dalaney Algiere (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) and freshman Ariella Carter (Avon, Ohio/Hearts for Jesus Christ) each recorded 10 kills.
Algiere added a team-high six blocks while Trenta recorded a team-high 31 digs. Trageser posted 50 assists and added 18 digs in the win.
Grove City returns to action on Tuesday when the Wolverines host PAC-foe Saint Vincent in a 6:30 p.m. match.
