Wolverines clinch PAC berth in Senior Day sweep of Thiel
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College volleyball team secured a berth in the six-team Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament by sweeping Mercer County rival Thiel 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 in conference play on Senior Day inside the Grove City College Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Laura Buchanan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) pounded 13 kills to lead all players while sophomore Jamie Robatisin (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) also reached double-digit kills for the Wolverines (14-15, 10-6 PAC) with 10 kills to go with 11 digs.
Senior Natalija Galens (Covert, Mich./Grace Christian) recorded nine kills and team-bests of 22 digs and two service aces in the victory while fellow senior Amy Trageser (Marriottsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian) posted career-highs eight kills and four blocks, including five kills in the first game, to go with 33 assists and seven digs.
Senior Libbie Casey (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), the third Wolverine senior to be honored in her final regular-season home match, led the Wolverine defense with five blocks to go with a service ace while Buchanan and sophomore Ariella Carter (Avon, Ohio/Hearts For Jesus Christ) added two blocks each.
Bailey Holmes led Thiel (3-24, 3-12 PAC) with 10 kills.
With the victory, Grove City has assured itself of the team's first winning conference record since 2007. The top six teams in the league will compete in the conference tournament November 3-7. The Wolverines are guaranteed to be either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed.
Grove City visits Westminster in conference action on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
