September 12, 1998--The Grove City women's volleyball team earned a spot in the championship match at the Allegheny College Tournament with a 3-1 win over Geneseo, but had to settle for the second-place trophy as Mount Union prevailed 3-0 in the finals in Meadville Saturday afternoon.

Senior Liz Sparks (Grove City, PA/Grove City) keyed the 17-15, 10-15, 15-4, 15-9 win over Geneseo with 21 kills.  Freshman Julie Porter (Medina, OH/First Baptist Christian) registered 11 kills and junior Nicole Hable (Shoreview, MN/Totino-Grace) added 36 digs.

In the 11-15, 3-15, 8-15 loss to Mount Union, Sparks recorded 18 kills, while junior Heather Oates (Delavan, IL/Delavan), Hable, and senior Erin Mayne (Elyria, OH/Elyria) finished with 19, 18 and 17 digs, respectively.

Grove City defeated tournament host Allegheny, 3-2, and Fredonia, 3-2, Friday night.  

Sparks accumulated 91 kills in 17 games at the two-day tournament, an average of 5.4 kills per game.

The Lady Wolverines' record moved to 5-3 overall.  They host Bethany in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener Wednesday, September 16, at 6:00 p.m.
